Science: Platelets take up tumor-derived RNA

Posted on

The scientific journal Blood publishes the landmark paper describing the principle of platelet-powered diagnostics. Dr. Jonas Nilsson and colleagues demonstrate that platelets can effciently acquire and protect circulating tumor-derived RNA. Since platelet isolation is routine in most hospitals this finding provides the basis of a new diagnostics platform that is easily adaptable to standard care.  In this publication Nilsson et al. show that platelets isolated from brain tumor and prostate cancer patients contain high-quality tumor-derived RNA biomarkers.
